The Positivity Column – Seeing God’s Easter Eggs

I won’t sugarcoat it for you; the world can be a depressing place. One only needs to look at the current situation in Afghanistan to see that life can be hard and full of heartbreak. However, even in a fallen world, God is present and walking alongside us. I believe one of the ways we see Him is through the small and seemingly ordinary events that cause us to smile throughout our daily lives. I call these little sparks of joy “Easter eggs” because they are minor events that bring joy and remind us of God’s presence in our lives. These Easter eggs can pop up anywhere, at any time. They can be small and simple events, meaning they’re hardly noticeable, or they could be a little bit more complex. Today, I would love to share with you a few of the Easter eggs I found this week!

One Easter egg that brings me joy repeatedly to this week is Disney movie character connections. In some Disney-Pixar movies, there are several little hints that correlate with different movies – and not with the original plot – but are made by the same company. I love this connection! Whenever I see a crossover character while I’m watching a Disney movie, it brings a smile to my face. For example, one of my favorites is seeing Rapunzel from Tangled coming to Elsa’s coronation in Frozen. These Disney Easter eggs are small scenes that tend to be hidden or not make sense at first, but when I look closer, I can see the crossover. While the scenes are not monumental in the grand scheme of things, they do bring a smile to my face and joy to my heart.

Another Easter egg I found this week was while in my car. Last Monday, I was driving to Regent’s campus and had to stop on a heavily trafficked road to let geese cross the street. I was a little bit annoyed at first, but after I drove away, I realized how happy seeing the baby geese follow their mama made me. I was even in the front of the traffic that was stopped for them so I could see–and I’m a bit of a short person, which made being in the front a bigger blessing. Though it was a brief moment, seeing those geese made my entire week.

My final Easter egg from the week involved school and God’s Word. A few days ago I took a quiz and did not get the result I was hoping for. I was very upset and could not find it in myself to settle down; I was so worked up that I could barely think straight. Then, I got an email from Regent University with a list of Bible verses to encourage me. The list of verses came not even five minutes after I got my bad grade from Blackboard, but all I could do in that moment was look up to the sky and say “Thank you” to God.

The Lord can be clever like that, sending us little things in life to brighten our days even when we think they couldn’t have anything positive in them. Now, I have a question for you: what are some Easter eggs that you’ve experienced lately? How did they make you feel? I know what my answer to the question is. Even in a chaotic world that can feel bleak and messy, God still gives me these little hints that He’s here walking alongside me, doing life with me. He is present and involved in our lives even though it doesn’t always seem like it sometimes. These small Easter eggs help me feel comforted and loved by Him, the Almighty, and there is no better feeling than that.
