Student shot and killed at Liberty University (UPDATED)

Last night, a male student at Liberty University was shot and killed by an emergency services officer following an altercation in a women’s-only residential hall.  According to a statement released by the university, the student attacked the officer, who is currently being treated at Lynchburg General Hospital.  Not much more is known at the moment, but the Lynchburg Police Department is investigating the matter.

Liberty’s campus is remaining open and operating as usual.

UPDATE 11/20: According to NBC News, the student is 19-year-old Joshua Hathaway.  After telling the security officer that his car had been stolen, he attacked the officer with a hammer.  While no one is sure what provoked the attack, Hathaway’s roommate claims that he had been acting strange.  His car was found parked just a short distance away.

The officer involved has been suspended pending the investigation.
