Rain didn’t stomp on Dr. M.G. “Pat” Robertson’s parade as Regent faculty, staff, students and alumni joined to celebrate his 80th birthday on March 22. The standing room only crowd was festive in a tent outside of the School of Communication & Performing Arts Center building. Guest speakers included Robertson’s family members and friends. A video montage was presented, showing some of his fondest moments.
“It was great. I got to know the history of where I work and where I am from,” said Richard Downey, adding that he sees how he is truly impacting the kingdom of God as staff member at CBN. “God shows us that the small things we do, he really appreciates.”
Part of the celebration included a prayer dedication for the new Chapel and Divinity School construction site and the successful completion of the building. The estimated $17 million structure, a vision the Lord placed on Robertson’s heart, is also a wish he believes will come to fruition.
“I respect what he has done,” said Chris Remaley who works in production at CBN.
The afternoon concluded with a bbq style lunch including fried chicken, cole slaw, potato salad and bbq pork.
“I loved it,” said Jessica Wallace, an undergraduate government student. Wallace said that the ceremony was intimate and sincere.
Located in Virginia Beach, Va., Regent University was founded in 1977 by Robertson, who has served as its president and chancellor. He also founded The Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) Inc in 1960. In 2009, President-elect Dr. Carlos Campo, as announced as Robertson’s successor at Regent. He will take the helm this summer.
“When I think about ‘The 700 Club’ it’s the first time I was introduced to him,” said Yanina James, an undergraduate communication student. James said the 80th birthday event “was fitting.”
